Jakarta (Indonesia Window) – Some people find memorizing the Quran is quite difficult, and even a few finally stop before reaching the goal.

Usually, the family matters. The demands from work or school and college activities as well as the lack of an Islamic educational background are the reasons many Muslims are desperate to achieve their dreams of memorizing the Quran.

The following are some useful steps that can help you stay on your journey of memorizing the Holy Book.

Start small

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Commit to memorizing a few lines at a time, and increase only when you’re ready to handle more. This will be easier for you to digest and will help to steadily build your pace

Consistency is key

The single most important aspect of any goal or habit you want to achieve is consistency, and memorizing the Quran is no different.

Develop a habit of spending a certain amount of time with the Quran each day. Make sure this is practical and small, to begin with. Focus on building this habit for 30 days.

For example, commit to 20 minutes of Quran time after Fajr when your kids are asleep or before you head off to work/university. If you can maintain this for 30 days, then increase accordingly. If you can’t, look to change something up. Commit to 10 minutes instead, or set aside time when the kids are at school and you’re home alone.

Don’t neglect revision

Memorizing the Quran is actually 80 percent revision and 20 percent memorization. Divide your Quran time with that ratio. This becomes increasingly important as you memorize more.

If you keep on memorizing without properly revising what you’ve memorized, you’re pouring water into a cup with a hole.

Have a pal/teacher

Don’t be alone on this journey. Have a memorizing buddy or a teacher who is in the same boat and hold each other accountable. This makes the process more enjoyable and also helps to keep you in check.

Don’t compare your progress to others

Everyone is on their own journeys. Your circumstances aren’t the same, so the comparison isn’t fair. Set yourself your own goals and work towards that

Intention and prayer

And finally, the most important tip before you begin this journey is your intention. Always make sure that your intention is to please Allah and attain nearness to His words.

Be sure to continually renew your intention, in the beginning, middle and end of your journey.
