Jakarta (Indonesia Window) - Indeed, only few countries in the world recognize Taiwan as an independent state.

However, Taiwan is a sovereign region which has similar systems of state mechanism as those in a number of other countries in the world. Among the   systems are the 15^th presidential and vice presidential elections, and the 10th legislative elections on January 11, 2020.

The direct presidential and vice presidential elections by the people, that have  been held since 1996 show that Taiwan, also known as the Republic of China (ROC) fully implements sovereign democracy.

A statement from the Taipei Economic and Trade Office (TETO) received in Jakarta on Thursday stressed that the general elections on January 11, 2020 showed the determination of the people of Taiwan to implement democracy and freedom.

The general elections also show the fact that Taiwan is a sovereign and independent country.

The statement from TETO also stated that compared to the condition of the Hong Kong people who are still struggling to get freedom of democracy on the streets for several months, but without success, Taiwan has proven to the world through elections that the Formosa Island is not part of the People's Republic of China.

In addition, Taiwan will never accept what China calls one country, two systems.

The elections have attracted wide attention from international media with around 150 journalists from 100 foreign media will visit Taiwan for coverages and interviews with a large number of sources.

A total of 60 foreign media journalists who have been stationed in Taiwan will also report the elections in depth.

Participants

Three groups of candidates will participate in the presidential elections, namely incumbent president Tsai Ing-wen and Lai Ching-te from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP); Han Kuo-yu and Chang San-cheng representing the Kuomintang (KMT); and James Soong and Sandra Yu for the People First Party.

Meanwhile, in legislative elections, a total of 647 candidates will compete for 113 legislative seats.

At present, there are more than 300,000 Indonesians who work, study and live in Taiwan.

Indonesian citizens in Taiwan can observe the implementation of Taiwan's democratic system and feel the atmosphere of vibrant elections.

The relationship between Indonesia and Taiwan has been closely intertwined and cannot be separated.

Whatever the outcome of the presidential elections, friendship between Indonesia and Taiwan will continue, and cooperation between the two parties will be even tighter.
